At the unveiling of the original iPhone in 2007, Steve Jobs famously dismissed the thought of a stylus, saying, “Who wants a stylus? You have to get em’, put em’ away. You lose them. Yuck.” Understandably, the announcement of the Apple Pencil at Apple’s press conference yesterday elicited a unanimous chuckle from the audience, with the tech firm going in direct opposition to its founder’s words. So what has changed in the eight years since Jobs’ statement? According to The Verge, quite a few things in fact — firstly, the devices in question are vastly different, with the iPad Pro’s 12.9-inch screen designed specifically for precision drawing whereas that was never the case with the iPhone’s 3.5-inch screen; furthermore, styluses of the mid-2000s were to be used with resistive touchscreens which required jabbing and dragging with force on the screen to register any action. Today, however, the iPad Pro’s capacitive touchscreen has more than surpassed the subpar touchscreens that proliferated the market in 2007. Read more over at The Verge by clicking here.
