Scandinavian Simplicity: The Influence of Danish Design

influence of Danish design
Influenced by the German Bauhaus school, Danish designers and architects are known for treasuring the concepts of minimalism and functionality. London-based modern-furniture store Aram sent us this infographic that explains the influence of Danish design throughout its history.

Making use of natural materials such as wood, granite and leather, the projects envisioned by Danish designers commonly aim to make a powerful visual impact. However, aesthetics must always follow function, as architect Gustav Friedrich (von) Hetsch stated.

After a short introduction, the graphic below pays tribute to some of the most influential figures in Danish design. Arne Jacobsen is known for his massive contribution to Functionalism and his simple but effective chairs. When you think of vibrant and exotic colors, the name Verner Panton comes to mind, one of Denmark’s most influential 20th-century furniture and interior designers.

Hans J. Wegner played with “organic functionality,” designing more than 500 different chairs. Over 100 of them were put into mass production, further becoming recognizable design icons. Børge Mogensen and Poul Kjærholm are the two other designers honored here.

Read through this infographic in detail and be reminded of some great creative minds and their works.

1990s House Gets A New Identity And A New Design

This is House N, a residence located in Moscow, Russia. Originally, the initial house was built in the 1990s. The owner recently it was time for a change..and it was a big one. The entire house was redesigned and it basically became a whole new residence. In 2013 it got a new identity. The whole transformation was a project by 4a Arkiteckten.

The changes brought to the house were major. The new design is harmonious and everything is in perfect sync. House is a bright and spacious residence with smooth dialogue between the rooms as well as between the indoor and outdoor areas. The project was more than just a simple renovation. It was a complete reinterpretation of the existing building.

The interior is very open and bright. The house has two levels. The living area is very spacious and situated on the ground floor. It has floor-to-ceiling windows with views of the outdoors. A spiral staircase offers access to the upper spaces. The staircase has a sleek and elegant design and the shape makes it space-saving.

Upstairs the design is similar to the rest of the house and thus the whole décor is cohesive. The bedrooms are technically occupying the attic. Here, the décor is serene and simple and the shape of the ceiling makes them feel cozy and intimate.
