Psychology’s most controversial textbook studies have been getting the Hollywood treatment of late: first, the Stanford prison experiment, and now, Milgram’s literally shocking 1961 experiment on obedience to authority. Experimenter casts Peter Sarsgaard as psychologist Stanley Milgram himself, who devises a radical experiment to test to what extent people will carry out orders even if it fundamentally conflicts with their moral values. The film thus follows Milgram through trial and tribulation after he publishes the results of the study, subsequently dividing the world of psychology in half while shedding light on a terrible component of human nature. Experimenter will release in the U.S. on October 16.
