Car Designer Radu Muntean Explains Why He Drives a Vintage 1971 BMW 2002

Car designers have a tough task of producing something that’s both beautiful and function, that draws attention to itself without overdoing it. With that in mind, it’s surprising to find that Radu Muntean, car designer whose work has been commissioned by Ford, General Motors and even Tesla, chose to showcase his vintage 1971 BMW 2002 to Petrolicious. The boxy, two-door four seater once aimed for the luxury car owners in the mid to late 20th century has seen its share of upgrades, including a coilover suspension system for sportscar-like handling, an upgraded straight-six cylinder M20 engine out of the larger 5 series of the time and wider wheels and tires for an overall more aggressive stance. Radu’s passion for cars speaks volumes in his decision to drive the 2002 over modern-day supercars or sportscars, but his answer, albeit simple, says it all: “It’s exactly the car I wanted to build, it’s exactly what I wanted to drive, and it does everything perfect for me.”
