‘Advanced Style: Men’ Celebrates Dandily Dressed Older Men

True to famed dramatist George Bernard Shaw’s quote that “we don’t stop playing because we grow old; we grow old because we stop playing,” is a heartwarming look at a select few older gentlemen who have found the elixir of life — for the mind, at least — in unabashed, flamboyant fashion. They are the subject of this latest short film from NOWNESS by director Lina Plioplyte and Ari Seth Cohen, the latter of whom is the author of Advanced Style, an enormously successful blog on well-dressed older women, which has since become a book and Kickstarter-funded documentary. “The reason that I chose to focus primarily on women is not only due to the fact that my grandmother was my best friend, but I have always felt that women are judged way more harshly than men in terms of aging,” says Cohen. “But I was also very close to my grandfathers, who were both very dapper men. I used to steal grandpa Jack’s fishing caps and argyle socks and Papa Hal’s Italian sports coats to wear to elementary school.” Watch the video above for five examples of what we should all hope to be in our later years.
