DIY Gilded Skull Vase

Throughout my late 20’s, I often shyed away from decorating my home for Halloween because the decorations I could find were–well–a bit tacky and geared more towards kids than adults. Over the past year though, I’ve been noticing skulls showing up in interior design as fun, non-holiday, cheeky accessories, and am really liking the trend. So this year, with Halloween just around the corner, I’ve hopped on the skull party train and created a skull vase for my home.

DIY Gilded Skull Vase

What I love about this project, is it adds a spooky (yet tasteful) touch, and it could really stay in my living room all year long, (just remove the pumpkins and place it on a stack of books) and it’s an affordable project. The styrofoam skull was on sale at my craft store for $4.99!

I used faux succulents that tuck right into the top of the skull, so it’s super easy to create and even easier to maintain, as you won’t need a green thumb to keep the succulents looking great. The finished project captures the essence of Halloween without going over-the-top tacky. Here’s how it’s done!

Materials:

  • Styrofoam skull (available at craft stores)
  • Metallic gold spray paint
  • Serrated knife
  • Variety of faux succulents
  • Scissors

DIY Gilded Skull Vase - Carve

Step 1. Carve a 1.5″ diameter hole about 2″ deep on the top of styrofoam skull with a serrated knife. This will be the spot where the succulents will tuck into the skull. Be careful not to cut yourself.

Step 2. Apply a few coats of gold spray paint to the styrofoam skull. Allow to dry between each coat, and make sure to work in a well ventilated area.

DIY Gilded Skull Vase - Arrange Plants

Step 3. Arrange succulents in the hole on the top of the skull. Trim stems to appropriate shorter length, and poke the stem wires deeper into the styrofoam to secure into place. Use a variety of types of succulents for added interest.

And that’s it. Simple as simple can be! Set out the skull in your living room or office and enjoy.

Farmhouse Kitchen Sinks – For The Practical And Nostalgic Cook

The term farmhouse kitchen sink tends to be a little misleading. This type of sink is not necessarily linked to farmhouses, cottages and barns. But it is a very specific type. There are several characteristics that define it.

Because farmhouse kitchen sinks don;t come with holes for the faucet, you need to be creative

First of all, a farmhouse kitchen sink is very sturdy and also very large compared to modern designs. It’s big enough to accommodate oversized pots and also deep enough for you to put there lots of dishes.

The faucet can be fitted into the countertop or mounted on the wall

Farmhouse kitchen sinks are meant to be a dramatic focal point, they are large, deep and easy to use.

The robust design of the sink means you’ll also need custom cabinets

Farmhouse kitchen sinks are always large and very deep compared to other types

Such a sink almost always becomes a focal point for the room

Another characteristic of farmhouse kitchen sinks is the fact that they don’t usually come with holes for the faucets to be fitted into. This meant that the faucet has to be either installed on the wall or though the cabinetry. This usually means you need to have custom cabinets made specifically for this type of sink. However, it also means that, if the sink gets damaged and needs to be replaced, you can just take it out and put it a new one. It’s a very simple process.

Just like for all other types, farmhouse kitchen sinks comes in a variety of sizes and designs

There’s also a selection of materials to choose from, including stainless steel

A big sink is often a plus for small kitchens with little counter space

Farmhouse kitchen sinks easily fit in traditional interior decors

For a modern kitchen, pick a less common material for the sink to make it stand out

Although big and robust, farmhouse kitchen sinks can allow you to save a lot of space

Because a farmhouse sink is to large and deep, it can easily accommodate pots, baking sheets and lots of dishes and it reduced splashes and spills. It’s a sink for the practical type who doesn’t have time to worry about aesthetic details. In a way, this is a heavy duty sink. Of course, this doesn’t mean it’s a bad-looking style. The simplicity of farmhouse kitchen sinks makes them suitable for a variety of styles and types of decors, including traditional, rustic and even modern or contemporary.
