Vetements’ Demna Gvasalia Named as Balenciaga’s New Creative Director

Following the departure of Alexander Wang in late July, Balenciaga has just announced that Demna Gvasalia of reactionary fashion collective Vetements will be taken over its helm as creative director. A veteran of the fashion industry, Gvasalia attended Antwerp’s Royal Academy of Fine Arts before working at Maison Margiela and Louis Vuitton. The Georgian native then founded Vetements with six other designers, including his brother, in 2014, quickly garnering a following with the likes of Kanye West for its masculine, oversized basics. Vetements was one of eight finalists for the 2015 LVMH Prize. Gvasalia’s first collection for Balenciaga is expected to debut in the Spring 2016 season.
