Two Artists Used Google Earth to Create Stunning Mountainscapes

What do you do if you want to capture some of the earth’s most stunning landscapes, but don’t have the opportunity to travel around the world? You turn to Google Earth. That’s exactly what Meike Nixdorf did to create her stunning mountainscapes. Inspired by a scout video project on which she used the tech giant’s virtual globe two years ago, Nixdorf tapped Google’s program to satisfy her fascination with topography, first zooming in on New Zealand’s Mount Taranaki as she marveled at the intensity of the stratovolcano’s colors and textures. “There was something about this image that I connected to,” she said. “It was the way the mountain felt like someone had just built it out of modeling clay.”

Nixdorf then went about collecting images from all over the globe, “shooting” the likes of the Alps and Himalayas before teaming up with Grit Hackenberg to retouch the photos, transforming the rendered satellite imagery into something decidedly more beautiful. While the duo could have perhaps traversed the globe for the project, Google Earth ultimately gave them much more control over the final images while providing a perspective that would have otherwise been impossible.
