One of the biggest barriers to biking in a city is arguably the size of a bike — too large, and it becomes a burden to switch between different modes of transportation with it for the most efficient journey (not to mention finding bike parking); too small, and it becomes difficult to cover much ground at all. However, the A-Bike Electric aims to lower these barriers and increase urban cycling by adding an electric drive to a telescopic, lightweight frame designed for quick assembly and disassembly. With its detachable 24V battery, the A-Bike can provide electric power assistance for 25km on a single charge, and sensors allow the bike to sense when you need assistance the most — for example, kicking in when it detects you slowing down as you approach a hill. In addition, a dynamically geared dual-chain system allows the same rate of pedaling as on a full-sized bike. Will this bike become the next great democratizer of urban cycling?
