Messner Mountain Museum Corones Explores the Traditions of Mountaineering

Constructed by Zaha Hadid Architects, the Messner Mountain Museum Corones is located in South Tyrol, Italy. The museum is embedded in the summit of Mount Kronplatz and is surrounded by the alpine peaks of the Ortler, Zillertal and Dolomites. Messner was the first person to climb all 14 mountains around the world and was the first man to climb Mount Everest without tanked oxygen. The museum’s light exterior panels are made of glass-reinforced fibre concrete juxtaposed against the darker interior panelling representative of the coloration found deep within a mountain. The building’s general design allows patrons to descend into the mountain’s caverns and grottos before emerging through the mountain wall to enjoy panoramic views of their surroundings.
