Urthecast Set to Bring HD Live Streaming of Earth From the International Space Station

Founded in 2013 on the promise to bring live HD video streaming of the Earth’s surface from the International Space Station, Vancouver-based Urthecast has just released videos taken using the Ultra HD camera it has installed on the Russian section of the station, saying that its streaming service will begin this July. As shown in the three videos shot of Barcelona, London and Boston, the camera is able to capture real-time footage at a resolution of one meter, with the viewer able to pick out individual cars driving along roads, and witness the elongation of skyscrapers as the ISS continues on its orbit above the Earth. With a mission of the democratization of Earth imagery, the service will release with an open API for developers to appropriate the video footage in any number of applciations, from disaster monitoring to video games.
