Spider-Man Joins Marvel Cinematic Universe

Sony and Marvel have worked out a deal to allow Spidey to join the Marvel Cinematic Universe. According to Marvel’s press release, “the new Spider-Man will first appear in a Marvel film from Marvel’s Cinematic Universe.” This means we may see Spider-Man fighting alongside The Avengers. However, Spider-Man will continue with the next installment of its own namesake franchise, due to be released in 2017.

Albeit the collaboration, Sony still owns Spider-Man and has control over the franchise’s finances, distribution and creative direction. Sony and Marvel are also discussing plans to cross-integrate the characters in MCU with Spider-Man, potentially seeing members of The Avengers in a future Spider-Man film. This may put Andrew Garfield out of work, while also affecting tentative release dates set for The Avengers franchise. For more information on the partnership head to Comics Alliance.
