Jolla’s Crowdfunded Tablet

Finnish mobile developer Jolla is taking a unique approach to building their new tablet: by crowdsourcing both its design and funding. It’s a strategy that poses significant risks, but the Finnish company isn’t afraid to go off script with their latest venture. And they’re not alone – within hours of posting their project on crowd funding platform Indiegogo, the campaign was already fully funded, hitting $380,000 USD with ease. Standout features include a quad-core CPU, 32GB of upgradeable memory, and a 2,048 x 1,536 7.85 inch screen. In addition, users can pitch their own ideas for the tablet directly to Jolla, with a Reddit style upvoting system ensuring the most popular ideas make their way towards development. As for design, Jolla employed a clean, minimalistic look, with what the company calls a “distraction-free front.” Powered by Jolla’s own OS, Sailfish 2.0, the tablet still plays nicely with Android, giving Jolla a wide range of potential users. Starting at a very intriguing $189 USD, Jolla is estimating deliveries for their new tablet to start May 2015.
