Ars Electronica Lights Up the Sky with LED-Equipped Quadcopters

This year’s Festival Ars Electronica, held in Linz, Austria, brought us a stunning aerial display of coordinated quadcopters, as part of Ars Electronica‘s Futurelab initiative. Utilizing quadcopters equipped with LEDs, otherwise known as “spaxels,” the Futurelab team were able to coordinate the machines in precise formation, or swarms which, when combined with long-exposure photography, created three-dimensional light trails hovering in the air. The purpose behind the display was to question where one delineates between whether they are interacting with many entities acting in unison, or one entity formed from many parts.
