London-based studio Zak Group has designed the book to accompany the LUMA Foundation’s exhibition of the work of artist Tony Oursler. Imponderable: The Archives of Tony Oursler was made in collaboration with the artist and presents his vast archive of ephemera relating to “the occult, UFOs, thought photography, colour theory, fairies, cults, séances, magic, optics, mesmerism and many other areas of intrigue.” The book documents over 1000 objects that trace a visual history of social, spiritual and intellectual belief systems that are from the past but very much future-oriented. Zak Group’s design reflects this, with its use of typefaces based on both 18th Century specimens and contemporary pixel cuts, as well as archival materials in the book’s slipcase and a metallic screen-print on the cover. The book is beautifully made, and reflects its content intelligently and without cliché.
