Process videos and talks of bearded “makers” are two-a-penny, but it’s less often we celebrate the industries that have quietly been rolling along for centuries, getting on with things far away from artisan coffee and Instagram. Director Liam Dickson has chosen to celebrate the workers at Robert Noble Mill in the Scottish borders. The mill was founded more than 200 years ago, moving to its Peebles premises in 1884. Back then, it employed more than 700 people: now, that number is just 87. Each and every member of the team is highly skilled, with designers, weavers, tuners, finishers, darners, drawers and warpers among their number, and Liam’s beautifully shot film shows the trade as one that’s painstakingly learnt, but with a story that’s rarely told. A lovely lament to industry and craft.
