Govaert & Vanhoutte Architects shared photos and information about the Graafjansdijk House, a modern project they envisioned in Knokke, Belgium. The building, near the Netherlands border, was constructed in a rural area overlooking a meadow.
From afar, one can make out a contemporary silhouette, developed mostly horizontally. The upper volume is wrapped in glass, and is smaller than the main level, defined by barnwood. “The ground level of the villa fully occupies the narrow terrain, apart from a small inner garden on the north side,” the architects say.
“The lower volume is wrapped in barnwood alongside the road, hiding the garage and creating a private atmosphere for the bedrooms. The north side opens up completely on both levels, allowing views over the meadow from the living room and kitchen on the upper level, as well as from the bedrooms downstairs.”
The same materials used for the exterior also can be found inside. Bespoke barnwood furniture and kitchen cabinets add a sense of warmth. All interiors feature a minimalist design, opening to the environment through floor-to-ceiling windows. A spacious wooden deck provides outdoor space for the inhabitants.
