Contemporary Retreat on Washington’s Orcas Island

architecture retreat designThe creative team at Heliotrope Architects designed Lone Madrone Retreat, a charming home on Washington state’s Orcas Island. Nestled within the lush vegetation of the San Juan Islands National Monument, the project is a modern-day oasis for creativity and contemplation.

The 1,600-square-foot contemporary retreat sits on the rocky, windswept shoreline. “Designed with retractable wall panels to protect from punishing winter storms, the house nevertheless opens up completely to the outdoors when the weather is fair, allowing the owners to fully interact with the landscape and views,” the architects say.

Sustainable features add value to this architectural gem. To minimize its impact on the surrounding landscape, “a garden roof was employed to replace landscape lost to construction,” the architects say. “Storm-water flows were engineered to replicate the pre-construction condition. Local materials (primarily Douglas fir and Western red cedar) and local craftspeople were utilized in all aspects of the project.”

Indoors, the abundance of wood is complemented by colorful furniture, adding dynamics to the space. Enjoy the peaceful vibes this home exudes and let us know what you think. [Photography by Sean Airhart]
