Silverlight House in London Makes a Bold Statement

architecture modern residenceLocated on a narrow strip of land between a busy road and the Grand Union canal in West London, the 6,490-square-foot Silverlight House showcases a strong contemporary personality.

Adjaye Associates developed the residence as a careful response to its urban context. “The main volume continues the parapet line of the Victorian pub to the east — a listed building — and the horizontal lines of the cladding system relate to the window heights of the older building at the edge of the site,” the architects say. “Due to a high level of traffic noise, the north façade has very few openings, but avoids being dark and gloomy thanks to the aluminum cladding.”

A wide range of spaces for different activities and states of mind define the overall design of this project. The archaeological character of the basement contrasts with the screened forecourt at ground level; the sense of enclosure in the guest and music rooms contrasts with the expansive master bedroom.

With its tall ceilings and daring accents, the living room is inspiring, to say the least. Its loose formality offers an invitation to relax and socialize. The vistas from the rooftop deck provide additional inspiration. [Information provided by Adjaye Associates; photography courtesy of Domus Nova]
