Jonathan Gardner’s paintings reference artists including Picasso, Magritte and even a smudge of Seurat. This cornucopia of 20th Century inspiration makes his work wonderfully stylised and surreal using an array of smooth, pastel tones. Depicting sporadically topless ladies smoking, playing tennis and admiring artwork, Jonathan’s painted worlds are collage-like with furniture and walls seemingly laid on top of each other. The use of simply oil paint adds to this flatness and removes any sense of perspective allowing the viewer to fully immerse themselves into Jonathan’s bizarre scenes.
