Grotesk x Victory Journal x Juxtapoz T.SQ Newsstand in Times Square

Publishing Executive quotes that the print industry is currently a $640 billion USD business. Print isn’t dead, and Juxtapoz Magazine is here to remind us of just that. The celebrated publication teamed up with Swiss-born, Brooklyn-based artist Grotesk, Brooklyn’s sport and culture magazine Victory Journal and Times Square Arts to bring us the “T.SQ Newsstand.” The reworked newsstand is an artful reminder to support artists and print publications.

Along with Juxtapoz and Victory Journal, the stand offers a selection of hand-picked art and culture zines including a limited edition publication that features the work of photographer Daniel Arnold, conceptual artist Barbara Kruger, and director Charlie Ahearn. An array of signs and a large marquee created by painters Matt Wright and Mike Langley of Sky High Murals stands among a host of wooden sculptures like fake cigarette packs and pigeons built by Grotesk. Graffiti artists — such as New York’s notorious Smart Crew — were invited to leave their own personal touches to the stand as well.

About the project, Grotesk remarked:

When I arrived in New York from Switzerland in 1999, I was trying to find a French newspaper in Midtown. I found one in a very small newsstand on 23rd Street and was immediately fascinated by the raw beauty of the little shack; the feeling that it had been there for 50 years. To follow up on the 2009 Juxtapoz cover illustration of the urban relic, we built a fictionalized newsstand to scale and dropped in the middle of the SCOPE art fair. As a busy, vibrant structure with lots of color, it was a total anomaly in a gallery that normally featured a lot of white space. With the disappearance of the newsstands in NYC, it’s a great opportunity to bring the newsstand to the middle of Times Square, reminding people of the New York that existed not so long ago.

During the duration of the project, the newsstand also welcomes guest clerks and artists on-hand to sign and sell their work including limited edition prints, books and rare pieces from their archives. Check online to see which artists will be featured each day. Expect to see the likes of artists Grotesk, Porous Walker, Jason Polan, Jean Jullien and Cheryl Dunn, Juxtapoz Editor-In-Chief Evan Pricco, photographers Daniel Arnold and Will Robson-Scott, and Doubleday & Cartwright Creative Director Aaron Amaro.

The T.SQ Newsstand is located at the Broadway plaza between 44th and 45th street and runs until October 18.
