Following this summer’s news that he would step down as chairman of the company he founded over 50 years ago, Phil Knight sat down with USA Today to reflect on his time in the business and Nike’s growth during his reign. Knight clarified that he still intends to stay on at Nike despite relinquishing his current role — “I didn’t say I’m walking away. I said I was stepping down as chairman. I won’t walk away. I’ll be carried away.” — before covering a number of topics including former sports marketing executive Sonny Vaccaro (who signed Michael Jordan to his sneaker deal at Nike), Under Armour’s ability to challenge the Swoosh’s market domination and even his favorite all-time Nike commercial.
