Ai Weiwei “Circle of Animals/Zodiac Heads” @ CAC Málaga

On top of taking over the Royal Academy of Arts this month for his first major exhibition in the UK, controversial Chinese artist Ai Weiwei is making his way to the CAC Málaga for his first-ever showing in Spain. Entitled “Circle of Animals/Zodiac Heads,” the work — which, as Arrested Motion points out, was first introduced back in 2010 for the 29th São Paulo Biennale before hitting Los Angeles and New York City — features a dozen bronze sculptures, each standing over three meters tall with the heads of the Chinese zodiac perched on top. The piece takes cues from the water clock-fountain in the Summer Palace of Yuanming Yuan — destroyed during the Second Opium War — and references the consequences that modern regimes have on the traditions of the past.

“Circle of Animals/Zodiac Heads” opened September 18 and will remain on display through December 6.
