The country of Wales is normally conceived as a bucolic land of rolling green hills dotted with sheep, but if you’re traversing North Wales, you might stumble upon what’s called the world’s first “wavegarden” by the name of Surf Snowdonia. Set in the Conwy Valley amongst the Snowdonia mountains, Surf Snowdonia is a freshwater lagoon the size of approximately six soccer pitches and is split in the middle by a wave generator. Taking the title of the world’s longest manmade surfable waves, the wavegarden produces 2-meter high waves that peel for 150 meters and last 16 seconds. Built on a former industrial aluminum casting plant that closed in 2007, the construction process of the lagoon took 12 months and the removal of over 100 years of industrial waste, replacing it with what you see today.
