Instagram’s image quality storage has long been the subject of feverous contention, most recently addressed by The Verve’s Vlad Savov in a piece entitled “When Will Instagram Grow Up?” It seems as if the unheard cries of pixel-nitpickers will finally go answered as the photo sharing company has confirmed that Instagram will now store images at 1080 x 1080 size. It’s important to note that the change is not immediately effective – outwardly, at least – and that images will still display in the default resolution. However, by checking the source code on Instagram’s web viewer, users are able to quickly pick out their favorite images in full 1080px glory. In all likelihood, this switch behind-the-scenes comes as the drumroll to a larger rollout and full display overhaul in the coming days or weeks.
For now, users can use Instagram’s web viewer to access the high resolution image files. This is accomplished by accessing the page’s HTML (right-click, then choose ‘View Page Source’ from the drop-down menu) and searching for URLs ending in “.jpeg”. The first result on the page should be the high quality version. Enjoy tinkering around for now as we anticipate a larger announcement in the days to come.
