Growing up as the son of a commercial airline employee, Heilner would spend a sizeable amount of time staring out the windows of a plane, as well as poring over maps of his destinations, cultivating a fascination with mankind’s “unintentional mark-making that would play a large part in his artistic career. Since 2007, Heilner’s “Aerial Landscapes” photo series has involved him chartering light aircraft flights across various landscapes across America, as well as abroad in Dubai. Covering everything from the profligate residential developments of Dubai and sprawling suburbia of Florida, to the transient Black Rock City of the Burning Man Festival, and the toxic yet calming hues of potash mines in Utah, Heilner’s camera lens flattens and crops the image, framing human manipulation of the earth into compositions that are both beautiful and sobering.
