Grooveshark Has Been Forced to Close Shop

After six years of legal battles with Universal Music Group, Sony Music and Warner Music Group, Grooveshark has been ordered by the court to close shop. A streaming service that at one point had over 30 million users, was found guilty of copyright infringement for illegally sharing music not properly obtained from the aforementioned labels. Grooveshark was presented with two options, either pay a possible maximum sum of $736 million USD in fines or accept a settlement with said record labels to hand over its website, apps and patents. The longstanding site chose the latter. Check out Grooveshark’s farewell letter here.
