‘Il Capo,’ A Short Film Looking at an Italian Marble Quarry

NOWNESS recently delivered a breathtaking excerpt from filmmaker Yuri Ancarani’s documentary Il Capo (The Chief). Spending nearly a year filming on the Monte Bettolgi in the Carrara region of the Apuan Alps, in Northwest Italy, the Italian director followed a marble quarry boss as he guided his men through the extraction process, using a silent language of hand gestures. “I was so taken by the chief, watching him work,” says Ancarani, stating “how he can move gigantic marble blocks using enormous excavators, but his own movements are light, precise and determined.” For more on Il Capo, be sure to head over to their site here.
