I've had a minor obsession with metallics this holiday season. Okay, a major one. So when I spotted these textured scrapbook pages at the craft store, I knew I had to have them. I began experimenting with a pencil compass, and I came up with a fun metallic Christmas tree.

I'm sure you've noticed the gold sea urchin. Those little guys are a hot commodity in the world of design and interior decor. But they're fragile, and they can cost a pretty penny. So how do you take the look for a test drive? With this easy peasy urchin hack, or course! Can you tell which one was handmade and which was a store-bought item?

Today we’re excited to share a holiday vignette with Chad Falkenberg and Kelly Reynolds, the duo behind the design studio, Falken Reynolds here in Vancouver. We’re continuously inspired by their eye for detail and originality in their work.

Tell us a bit about your photos?
We like decor that has a feeling of authenticity about it – but in the rainforest on the West Coast we’re often without snow for the holidays. Birch bark is a great way to introduce white in a natural and quiet way. We used it to make an advent calendar but simply gluing two pieces of bark together with a bit of space to make a pocket. While cutting out the Neutra numbers took a bit of time, the bark cuts with regular scissors. The wreath was really quick to make – we had a friend bend a copper pipe into a circle that connects with a simple clasp. The birch bark is cut into rectangles. We poured a bit of hot water over the section we wanted it to bend. Then we quickly drill a holes through the centre of the square and thread it onto the copper. The bark dries pretty quick and then we rotate the squares and space out the white and brown so it creates a full wintery look. We used a mix of natural branches to create a garland for the stairs. The mix of pine, spruce and cedar gives a fuller look with a bit more variety and depth. Magnolia branches are also great to add a bit of green with some depth. The nativity scene is was handmade by Chad’s Grandfather.

(more after the jump)

What is your favorite holiday tradition?
We have a group of friends who get together every year for Raclette – We’ve been doing it for nearly 15 years now… What’s better than cheese and wine?

Tell us three go-to gifts that you’ll be giving this year
We love these pieces from Provide Home by Fort Standard. The Stone Candle Holder and Crest Bottle Opener are great small gives that work well for both men and women…

The grey Vita towels from Orling & Wu are incredibly soft and the colour is perfect for someone who likes a monochromatic look but without going white.

The Crystal T Lights from Seletti are available at Inform Interiors. We love the bright colours and the how the candle light plays off the cuts in the glass.

Thank you Chad and Kelly!

Whether rustic, romantic, edgy or classic, your headboard is the focal point of your bedroom and does the most to set the tone for your nighttime oasis. Choosing the right headboard is an important design factor — but that doesn’t mean you’re limited to what you see in the design studios or furniture showrooms.

Headboards, as impactful as they are on your room’s design, are actually one of the easiest bedroom components to make yourself. DIY headboard ideas are as limitless as your imagination, but they essentially fall into five categories: wood, fabric, metal, free-form and art-based.

Once you’ve decided on the feeling that you want from your headboard, take an honest look at your budget, time and comfort level with DIY projects. Then peruse our photo gallery for some inspiration, and make the headboard you’ve been dreaming about.

DIY Headboard Ideas

wood rustic headboard

Wood

This is probably the first thing you think of when you think DIY headboards. Pallets, doors, shutters, window frames, fireplace mantels and barn wood all make excellent backdrops for your bed, and the versatility that wood offers for your bedroom is practically endless.

For example, you can make a beautifully stained masterpiece or repurpose some chipped vintage door frames to set the tone for your bedroom. Weathered shutters make a perfect headboard if you want a beachy cottage vibe. Wood offers a multitude of options and finish styles at a reasonable cost.

elegant tufted headboard

Fabric

Want something a little softer for your DIY headboard? Fabric options have you covered — literally. Whether you prefer the formal indulgence of tufted, buttoned or pintucked headboards or something more casual, fabric offers many soft, indulgent choices for your bedroom.

For the opulence of fabric without the formality, try simply hanging a quilt, some lace or a curtain behind your bed. You’ll still create a focal point, but it won’t require hours of labor.

stainless steel

Metal

On the opposite end of the spectrum from the fluid feel of fabric is the fixed structure of metal. This certainly doesn’t mean it is without beauty; a metal headboard can have a romantic feel, such as a wrought-iron gate with artificial flowers intertwined.

Even the industrial feel of corrugated sheet metal can be softened by an intricate decorative cut. Metal may not be appealing to every taste, but there are a lot of options for the DIYer to make a signature headboard from this versatile material.

shutters

Free-Form

Even more than the creative potential in the first three categories, free-form headboards give you endless design freedom. You can use almost anything: pillows grouped into a display, pieces of driftwood or bamboo against the wall, vintage books adhered to a piece of backing.

A free-form headboard can infuse your personality and interests into a one-of-a kind creation. If it is your passion, it can become a focal point in your bedroom; with a free-form design, the ceiling’s the limit.

stencil

Art-Based

Similar to free-form headboards in their ability to capture your interests, art-based headboards have just a little more structure. Cover canvases with fabric or paint and group them on the wall over your bed. Framing pictures of loved ones or locales makes the most personalized of headboards, as does a backdrop of favorite quotes.

Can’t decide on just one color? Try arranging paint swatches in a way that appeals to your eye. Art-based projects allow you to make a signature piece that is often easily changeable; they also work for any budget.

There is no reason to feel limited to the headboards that are available for purchase. Let your creativity shine in a centerpiece for your bedroom. With a little elbow grease and a lot of inspiration, you can create the perfect piece for your bedroom and your budget. Which of these DIY headboard ideas speaks to you?

The Easiest Way to Try the Shibori Dyeing Technique /diy/238969.html /diy/238969.html#comments Thu, 17 Dec 2015 14:00:00 +0000 http://www.curbly.com/users/brittni-mehlhoff/posts/17653-the-easiest-way-to-try-the-shibori-dyeing-technique

If I had to choose one DIY trend / technique that I never get tired of, it would have to be dyeing. Mostly because it's a very easy process that (truly) anyone can complete. Plus, the before and after transformation is generally pretty dramatic. There are lots of options when it comes to dyeing too, from traditional dyeing to over-dyeing to dip dyeing, etc.

The one that I've been most interested in as of late though is Shibori dyeing, which basically means shaping and securing the textile before placing in a dye bath. I've simplified the process to make it easy enough for even the most beginner level DIYer to handle, and used rubber bands to create interesting designs in a matter of minutes. Click through to see how the pillows turned out and do some last minute decorating before the holidays roll around.

Gifts for Pets | Photo Ornament + Dog Biscuit Recipe /diy/238942.html /diy/238942.html#comments Thu, 17 Dec 2015 12:00:00 +0000 /diy/238942.html via. Poppytalk

When we visited Vancouver Island this past summer, we were gifted by the hotel we stayed at with a cute dog bone shaped cookie cutter and so this Christmas, treats will be given! We wanted to find a simple recipe with supplies we already have on hand normally (none of this brewers yeast and wheat germ stuff). Since our dog loves peanut butter we found a really simple recipe using only 4 ingredients; flour, peanut butter, eggs and a little bit of water (recipe below)!

Then we thought, what a fun gift idea for friends and family with dogs! And so when we were asked by Staples to write about their Copy & Print service, we thought what a perfect way to gift our furry friends. Some yummy treats wrapped with a customized Photo Tree Ornament with their mug on it!

Peanut Butter Dog Biscuits
(Adapted from Vanessa Baked)

1-1/2 cup flour (whole wheat, oat flour or rye flour works well)
1/2 cup of crunchy peanut butter
2 eggs
Up to 1/4 cup water

Beat the peanut butter and eggs together. Slowly add in the flour, incorporating it as you go. Knead together and try to incorporate all the ingredients below. If it looks a bit dry, add a litttle water at a time, incorporating it into a ball. You may not need all the water, just add enough to where it seems like a nice doughy consistency (not too dry, not too wet). On the counter top sprinkle a bit of flour and place the dough on top. Add a bit of flour to your rolling pin, and start to roll out the cookie dough to about a 1/4 of an inch thick. Once you have it spread out, cut out the cookies out using your cookie cutter, re-rolling out the dough each time until all the dough has been used. Bake for 30 minutes in a 350 °F oven.

We ordered our ornaments online by uploading photo’s of our furry friend’s photos to the Copy & Print site. With a few steps it was done and we were really pleased with the results. Such a fun keepsake too for a pet’s owner!

We also created a free downloadable/ box template that perfectly holds 6 dog biscuits which you can print at Staples or at home onto a thicker cardstock weight paper.

Another option would be to print out the template onto regular paper, and trace it onto cardboard.

Either way, the result is a fun DIY gift for your favorite furry friends!

This post is sponsored by Staples’ new Copy & Print service. Thank you for supporting the brands that support Poppytalk. Visit Staples’ Copy & Print;service; turning favorite photos into works of art, gifts or keepsakes with their new photo printing service. Perfect for the holiday season.

We recently stumbled upon SACKit, a Danish design company who makes these high-end bean-bag style chairs and ottomans (and other things like headphones and speakers) via MOE of Sweden on Instagram (image below). We’ve been looking for a casual chair that can be moved around easily from room to room for studying or TV games (or even outdoors, come summer), with a little more style and support than a bean bag so this really interests us. Plus finishing criss-cross stitching just sort of adds a more refined touch so one could get away with it in a modern-style living room fairly easily. Let’s take a look!

before it’s too late, i wanted to share an easy christmas ornament project that you can do this weekend! i love making ornaments for xmas because you can keep one and give the rest to your relatives or friends so you all have matching ones, which is super sweet when you really think about it.

i loooove ceramic hands and sadly only have three in my house, so i decided the tree needed some too. these are super easy to make, because once you’ve made one, you can make a bunch more using the first as a template.

DIY mini hand ornaments | almost makes perfect

01. condition your clay to get it nice and soft. form a ball and then use your rolling pin to roll it out flat.

02. cut your shape, like pictured above. once you’ve cut out the hand, use your blade to basically just score the finger creases.

03. once you’re happy with the first one, do the same for the rest of the ornaments by just placing it on top of more clay and tracing the shape with your blade.

04. poke a hole through the hand with a toothpick and make sure it’s large enough that it’ll fit a piece of string.

05. bake according to package directions. let cool.

06. once dry, you can paint if you’d like — i debated how to paint them for quite some time so i decided to leave them simple. apply a layer of gloss glaze.

07. tie string, hang on your tree!

Candy Wonderland Layer Cake /diy/238807.html /diy/238807.html#comments Wed, 16 Dec 2015 13:00:00 +0000 /diy/238807.html via. Poppytalk

投稿Candy Wonderland Layer CakeはSteal Magの最初に登場しました。

]]>

This cake is inspired by Australian cake baker extraordinaire, Katherine Sabbath, the pink cakes I loved as a kid and the magic of the holidays all rolled into one! A Candy Wonderland Layer Cake for the holidays!

We searched the city for some pretty lollipops, a few meringues and then topped it with sprinkles and broken pieces of meringue! The hardest part of this whole cake is the actually making of the cake (if you’re making it from scratch). The decorating is fairly simple (of course not as refined as Ms. Sabbath’s) but still, the result is festive and so fun to make—especially for kids! The recipe is the same we’ve used for our other cakes. The cake, a delicious buttercream frosting and topped with a delicious Belgian chocolate ganache!

For the Cake
3 white cake mixes or feel free to make your own from scratch!

Follow the directions to make the cake mix (or make your own from scratch), then divide the cake into six even parts. Pour each batter into their own individual pans. We used our small 6″ round pans. To add a red swirl, add a drop or two of red food coloring, and then stir into a candycane swirl. Bake for 30 minutes or until a toothpick comes clean when tested. Set aside to cool. Note: If you use a cake recipe, check out what it yields, as you may need to double the recipe to make 6 layers.

For the Buttercream Frosting
1 cup butter
1/4 cup milk
2 cups of icing sugar
2-6 drops of red food coloring

Beat egg on high speed until the butter is very pale in colour. Slowly add the icing sugar, then milk and vanilla. Beat for at least ten minutes until light and fluffy. Add food colouring 2 drops to make a light pink colour.

For the Ganache
1 cup of heavy cream
8 oz. Belgium chocolate chips

Heat the cream on the stove top until you see the cream coming to a simmer. Remove off burner. Add the chocolate and cover with a lid. Wait five minutes. Then with a whisk, start whisking from the center until well mixed. It will turn into a velvety ganache. Leave for ten minutes before using. Note: The longer you leave the ganache sit, the thicker it will get, so time is of the essence. Also if you stir it too much, it will loose it’s sheen. Pour over the cake, ever so gently, and then slowly push ganache over edges till it starts to drip down the sides.

For the Topping
Sprinkles
2 or 3 large Lollipops (different sizes is nice)
meringues (macarons or marshmallows or cookies could also be substituted) – or use all of them!

To Decorate
Insert the lollipop sticks into one side of the cake, making one higher than the other. With the meringues, take a toothpick and insert into one end of the meringue, then insert, again on one side of the cake, placing in front of the lollipops in a stylistic way. Next add sprinkles, again to one side. And also on the bottom of the cake. Finish off with a few crumbled pieces of meringue.

Yay!A fun for a festive party!

I've been looking for a fun graphic piece for our home that has some sort of cute little holiday message or countdown to Christmas day, but I'm finding it hard to find one that suits our style and aesthetic. So, I created a modern and sleek Chrismas sign that is versatile, functional and one-of-a-kind!

A Holiday Vignette with Nicole Phillips of Visual Heart /diy/238585.html /diy/238585.html#comments Tue, 15 Dec 2015 13:00:00 +0000 /diy/238585.html via. Poppytalk

Continuing with our “Holiday Vignette” series, and for those of you new here, we invited a few style makers that we’ve come to know both online and locally that we admire, asking them to send in a little holiday style vignette from their home to share with our readers. Today’s guest is Nicole Phillips of Visual Heart. A graphic designer, Nicole has a keen eye for design and we always enjoy seeing what she’s up to on her blog and instagram.

Tell us a bit about your vignettes?
Our Christmas decor isn’t over the top. We live in a loft apartment so we don’t have a lot of storage for seasonal items, so our holiday decor generally involves a simple string of lights, our tree with the same decorations every year and some DIY additions to change it up each year.

Our tree decorations are ornaments collected over the years and include lots of sparkle and metallics to reflect the lights on the tree, along with a few childhood ornaments and a couple of DIY ornaments Andrew and I made several years ago

The tree topper was a quick DIY this year, because I just can’t seem to find one in the stores that I like or that will stay upright on the top of the tree. I used metallic silver pipe cleaners wrapped around each other to form a starburst, I like the way it reflects the light and the fact that it’s so simple.

I picked up a stunning handmade wreath from the very talented Rogue Florist at Got Craft? Market. I decided to put it on the inside of our door so we can look at it all the time, but maybe in a few days I’ll share the beauty with our neighbours in the hallway.

Our fireplace already has an inviting rustic holiday feel with a reclaimed wood mantel, but with the addition of a string of lights, a maple syrup scented candle and a wine cork reindeer I made when I was a child, it’s just enough to make it festive.

Since I’m a graphic designer, I love collecting wrapping paper and designing my own cards and gift tags. This year our wrapped gifts use paper from Ikea and Daiso with the addition of gold ribbon and twine. The gift tags are my free printable tags available for download here and custom tags from Minted.

What is your favorite holiday tradition?
Baking cookies has got to be one of my favourite holiday traditions. I love ginger snaps and shortbread and I like to share them with family and friends. I grew up in a fairly non-religious, non-traditional household where we didn’t really celebrate the holidays, so Andrew and I have created our own way of celebrating and baking cookies is one of them. Here’s a few of my recipes: Earl Grey Shortbread Cookie Recipe
Classic Ginger Snap Cookie Recipe

What are three go-to gifts that you’ll be giving this year?
I’m not really into shopping and giving “stuff” but when I do, I like them to be practical, edible, handmade or memorable experiences.

Homemade canned fruit. In the Summer months Andrew and I like to can peaches, pears, cherries, jam or chutney. Bourbon Vanilla Cherries are a delicious gift and to make it extra personalized we made our own labels for the jars. Here’s the recipe and free printable labels.

Dave’s Coffee Syrup from Old Faithful Shop is so good! Amazing poured over vanilla ice cream, on cake, or as iced coffee in the Summer. Giving artisan food products is a great alternative to bringing a bottle of wine to a holiday party.

The only umbrella you will ever need to buy. Seriously, I’ve had mine for years and I walk everywhere in wind and heavy rain. The Umbrella Shop in Vancouver has super quality umbrellas. The spokes are rubber so they’re really flexible and wind resistant. They also come in so many great colours.

Thank you Nicole!
