The Animator Behind Totoro and Spirited Away Is Opening a Nature Sanctuary in Japan

Hayao Miyazaki and his production company, Studio Ghibli are responsible for some of the most recognizable and iconic children’s stories. These stories have touched both kids and adults, transcending cultural boundaries and generations. Now, you’ll have the chance to Miyazaki’s imaginary worlds for real. Although the animator has retired, there are plans for a physical nature retreat for children. Located in a forest in Kumejima, a remote Japanese island in Okinawa, the project allows the legend to fuse his creativity and love for the environment in another output that will inspire us all. Costing Miyazaki almost $2.5 million USD, the park will not begin construction until next April, with a tentative completion date of 2018.
