Design has got very serious-minded of late – with earnest, ‘natural’ timber surfaces and austere ‘mid-century’ modernism reaching saturation point, though, it’s small wonder we’re seeing the irreverent, merry pranks of post-modernist furniture and design return to favour. We round up five of the best from the burgeoning PoMo revival.

Nathalie Du Pasquier is one of the founding members of Memphis, the Milan-based designers held largely responsible for the global popularity of post-modernist furniture in the 1980s. Her work for Hay is a riot of jagged pattern and explosive colour. It was exhibited at Milan earlier this year to enough fanfare to encourage Hay to extend the collection, but the fact that her designs can now be found gracing American Apparel t-shirts provides further evidence, if any was needed, that a PoMo revival is well and truly underway…
